Bingo is a game often associated with low-cost gambling and
experiences various fluctuations in its popularity. The origin of the game
can be traced back to the unification of Italy when a lottery system was
first devised in 1530 to help raise money for the newly unified country. The
game was later adapted by the French and became known as Lotto. After
various reviews and adaptations it surfaced in the United States under the
name of Beano so called because beans were used to cover the numbers.
Bingo is very much a game of chance and there is little skill required in
playing the game. The player is very much at the mercy of the laws of
randomness as spoken by the bingo caller. Tips for being successful at bingo
can only therefore suggest that one economizes as much as possible to buy as
many cards as one can in any particular round. The more cards a player is in
possession of, the more likely they are to be victorious in being the first
to have the required numbers covered. Another tip would be to ensure you are
focused when the numbers are called as one has only the time between each
call to check ones cards for the number that has been called.
A bingo card consists of a grid with numbers displayed on
5x5 matrixes. An announcer will inform players of the particular pattern
that needs to be formed on the cards for the game in question. This pattern
could consist of anything from the letter A to a House (in the UK and
Australia, or a Blackout or Cover All in the US and Canada) whereby all
the numbers must be covered. A caller then randomly selects a ball with a
number on it from a container and calls out the number. That ball is the set
aside so that the number cannot be called again. The players then check
their cards to see if they have the number called and if so they cover or
mark the number. Once a player has created the required pattern on their
card, they shout out Bingo.
It is more usual for players to purchase multiple cards
when playing
Bingo in the US and Canada than it
is in the UK. As a result, American and Canadian bingo players are often sat
on tables where their cards can be stuck to the tables with adhesive tape so
that they are able to check and mark off the numbers quickly and
efficiently. Special markers known as dabbers are also used to make the
marking of the cards a faster experience.
Bingo is uniquely a gambling game that is not only monopolized
by the Casino companies. In the US, churches and charity organizations
frequently employ the game as a mode of fundraising and socializing.
It is only the State of Nevada and Native American bingo halls that offer
commercial Bingo as played in the casinos although interestingly it is
generally offered to locals and not via the touristy and ritzy casinos of
Vegas. In the UK, the game is very profitable with companies competing for
customers to play in their bingo clubs. Of course, the advent of the
internet has meant that there are even more opportunities for players to
play bingo. The internet versions of bingo take out the need for players to
stay alert and mark their own cards between the calls because the bingo
website automatically marks the cards for the players. This can leave one
feeling slightly disempowered and less involved in the game although it
does mean that one can do other things whilst playing
online bingo.
Overall, bingo is much more of a social and tamer game
than the other gambling games available; however, the low costs and
seemingly harmless atmospheres of the bingo halls (often complete with their
fruit machines) can still lead to a lot of money being spent by an
unsuspecting player in one evening.
